Welcome to Scottish Society for Experimental Medicine
The Scottish Society for Experimental Medicine was founded in 1938 to promote research within Scottish Medical Schools. The Society's meetings provide a stimulating forum for the presentation and discussion of medical research. At present the Society holds two meetings annually, at which researchers present data either orally or in poster format. The Society is multi-disciplinary, and both clinical and non-clinical scientists are encouraged to join and attend. In order to nurture and promote the careers of young researchers, the Society supports the travel costs for junior presenting authors and provides awards for the best oral and poster presentations at each of its meetings. The most prestigious of these is the Sir James Black Award. In addition, the SSEM runs a Vacation Scholarship Scheme, providing support for undergraduate research projects during summer vacations.
