MEETINGS OF THE SOCIETY

TIMETABLE

Meetings of the Society are held twice a year, in Spring (usually late May) and Autumn (usually early November), in rotation between the Scottish Medical Schools, as follows:

FORMAT OF MEETINGS

About 30-40 papers are submitted for each meeting of the SSEM with 12 to 16 being chosen for oral presentation and a variable number of the others being presented as posters. At each meeting awards are made to the best oral and poster presentations, the most prestigious of these being the Sir James Black Award. A keynote lecturer is also invited to address each meeting. Attendance varies between 50-100 delegates.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

The Society welcomes abstracts of original research from all biomedical disciplines, including non-clinical research. A call for abstracts is sent ~3 months in advance by the Honorary Secretary to all Society Members and advertised by local Council Members in each of the Scottish Medical Schools.

Abstract forms can be downloaded from this page (see panel on right).

Completed abstract forms should be submitted by email to meetings@ssem.org.uk. They will be scored by members of the SSEM Council.

The Council Member who is organising the meeting will contact presenters with details of the final programme.

TRAVEL GRANTS

Presenting authors of accepted abstracts may apply for a travel grant from SSEM to cover travel expenses to attend the meeting. These grants are only available to authors aged <30 who do not work in the city where the meeting is being held and who do not have access to study leave support from the postgraduate deanery. Applicants should dowload an application form (see panel on right or go to the Downloads page of this site) which should be sent as an email attachment to secretary@ssem.org.uk giving details of their abstract and travel costs in advance of the meeting.

REGISTRATION

Registration is usually free but please do tell us if you are coming at least 2 weeks before the meeting so that catering can be arranged.

To register, simply email the Council Member who is organising the meeting (at meetings@ssem.org.uk) to say you are coming.
