SUMMER VACATION SCHOLARSHIPS
NOTE - SSEM Finances might be insufficient to allow awards of vacation studentships to be made in 2008 - please contact the Secretary before beginning to prepare an application
Introduced in 2001
Over the last few years the SSEM has developed its role in the nurturing of young researchers in Scotland. In order to extend this, the Executive Council of the Society established a Summer Vacation Scholarship Scheme to support research activity in Scottish Universities.
Up to two awards are made each year in open competition to undergraduate students for projects to be undertaken in a Scottish University. The sum of money available per student will be £1400, and should provide maintenance for students for up to eight weeks. No research consumables will be available and the supervisor must be able to guarantee an adequate level of support for the project.
Successful applicants will be expected to present the outcome of their research at a meeting of the SSEM.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications should be sent by email to the Honorary Secretary and must arrive before the 1st April.
Please include:
1) a one-page outline of the project proposal;
2) a one-page cv of the proposed supervisor (who should be a member of the SSEM; it is acceptable to include a membership application form with the studentship application);
3) a two-page cv of the candidate;
4) a letter from the Head of Department confirming that sufficient resources are available to provide consumables costs for the project.
The current Council will score the applications, and the result will be announced at the Spring meeting of the Society in May.
